Nissan’s New CEO: Can He Revitalize the Brand?
Nissan fans, rejoice! Or am I just overly enthusiastic at the mention of resurrecting the Silvia nameplate? As a die-hard Nissan fan, I have been concerned about their downward trajectory. New hope arrives with Nissan’s bold move of appointing a new CEO, described by his predecessor as “a real car guy.” Join me as I explore the optimistic ambitions of Nissan’s new leadership.

It is no secret that Nissan is a company in decline. Once a vibrant mainstay in the golden era of JDM sports cars in the ’90s, Nissan has plummeted into a mundane conglomerate that lacks soul. Internal issues such as declining sales, financial difficulty, a failed merger attempt, a lack of innovation, outdated models, weakened strategic alliances, and the threat of a looming bankruptcy are only some of the underlying issues the young and ambitious CEO inherits.
So who is Ivan Espinosa? In 2003, Ivan joined Nissan as an Engineering Analyst. In the years since, Espinosa has worked his way up to become Chief Planning Officer as of April 2024. With over a decade in product management, he was heavily integrated with passionate tasks such as overseeing vehicle launches, auto shows, and Nismo racing. On April 1, 2025, Espinosa succeeded Makoto Uchida as the new CEO of Nissan. Ivan is clutch kicking his ideas of reformation to the forefront of the brand. Upon being named CEO, Ivan states, “We’re going to be looking at the whole system.” Strengthening it’s U.S. and China lineup, cutting costs/selling assets, exploring partnerships, such as a Honda merger revival are some of his plans to revamp the whole system.

But what really has the automotive community revving at this change in leadership? By Espinosa’s own admission of reinvigorating it’s lineup of enthusiast vehicles. For example, as VP of Global Product Strategy in September of 2024, Ivan told Top Gear that it’s his dream to produce a new Silvia. The Nissan Silvia, “S-Chassis,” is a legendary front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car produced by Nissan dating back to the ’60s. In North America, Nissan introduced the platform as a “240sx” for the 1989 model year. The S-Chassis near 50-50 weight distribution, it’s reliable inline-four engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission, superior handling, affordability and a rising aftermarket for performance upgrades gained it a cult following among tuners and drift competitors. Espinosa states, “It’ll be a challenge, but it’s my job to find ways to do stuff like this because I think it’ll be great for customers and the brand, and if I can put the right formula in place we could make it work.” Now that the R35 GTR is out of production, that leaves the Nissan Z as the only sports car representing the company. Production issues, a high dealer markup, government/emissions regulations, and the lack of excitement makes the Z virtually unobtainable, thus creating a barrier for consumers at the pursuit of affordable rev matching thrills.
For now, Nissan has bigger fish to fry in order to stay afloat. Espinosa’s ambitious goal to create a line of high-performance products that appeal to the entry level customer as well as the established sports car enthusiast is an admirable rebellion as the automotive industry is heavily pushing the EV mandate. If Mr. Espinosa is successful in mass-producing an entry level internal combustion, rear-wheel drive sports car that is more accessible to younger generations in the coming years, that recipe could help increase desperately needed profit as well as rekindling passion amongst Nissan enthusiasts. As a proud Nissan 240sx owner, I wish you the utmost success, Ivan!
